War Against : Facebook and Twitter usage in cars.(US Regulators)

The automakers are approached by the US regulators to stop the in-car infotainment i.e., the transport department is asked to block the usage of social sites while driving including any kind of browsing. And also the car-makers insisted on designing such a navigation system which takes much less time to select and enter the address so that driver does not get distracted off the road.According to Transportation Secretary Ray LaHood this thing is very similar to the no use of cell phone with hand while driving , on which the work is going on.

The Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers (AAM), which represents GM and Toyota among others, said its own guidelines were less restrictive. AAM says the government’s proposals will lead to more use of handheld phones and other devices. And AAM Spokeswoman Gloria Bergquist said that 98 % of the accidents are not due to inbuilt systems but due to other distraction on the road.As per AAM rules the infotainment is allowed at low speed driving.

The guidelines will start within three years and are applicable on new vehicles . National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said the guidelines may be used to give incentives in its vehicle safety ratings in the future.

Don’t Cut Off Scooter Riders in Russia, they May Be Packing…an Angle Grinder!

Don’t Cut Off Scooter Riders in Russia, they May Be Packing…an Angle Grinder!

People who prefer two wheels instead of four for getting around always swear by their motorcycles and some really seem not to like drivers very much, for no apparent reason. This is clearly evidence of it, as this particular scooter rider from Russia came equipped to deal with any driver who was to cut him off…

The video posted after the virtual break, you will notice how the driver of the black Nissan Juke moves to the left side of the road to avoid a parked truck. It’s not the most severe maneuver of its type that we have seen, so the reaction it prompts is a bit over the top.

The angry rider takes out a battery , breaks the crossover’s mirror with his hand, then takes out the grinding tool and starts cutting.

The only question we have is that. Was he a construction worker, or did he deliberately bring it along to grind off people’s mirrors?

Future headlights : Turn rain invisible

The rain droplets is the bane for drivers driving after dark. But now the new technology co-developed by Intel and Carnegie Mellon University may prove advantageous,to find out how it works play the video.

Instead of relying on a bog-standard bulb to beam light out over a darkened road, the futuristic setup would use something more akin to a projector. The camera beneath that projector, keeping an eye on drops of rain as they enter the headlights’ beams. Information from that camera is sent to a processing unit, that identifies raindrops and makes a guess as to where each droplet is headed. The projector then spots out the bits of its projection where the rain drops are. The result is a light that shines out from the front of a vehicle in the dark, but doesn’t highlight any rain.

A powerful projector, camera and processing unit will be needed which will be more expensive than a normal bulb. And the technology will take about an decade to get implemented.

BMW, Audi Ready Entry-Level Diesels

BMW, Audi Ready Entry-Level Diesels

By  on March 15, 2013

Fans of the old BMW 335d won’t have to wait much longer for an all-new 3-Series diesel. On the other hand, Audi lovers will have to sit tight for an A4 diesel.

The next generation A4 will herald the fifth TDI in Audi’s lineup, when it launches with a 2.0L diesel engine for the 2015 model year. Rather than go with a two-year sales window for a current generation A4 TDI, Audi decided to wait until the next generation car and avoid the substantial homologation costs. The 3.0L V6 TDI was also nixed for similar reasons.

Luckily, BMW fans will get to see the new 328d at the New York Auto Show in two weeks time. Producing 180 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, the 328d will be available as a wagon, but no manual transmission has been confirmed. The previous 335d was offered only as an automatic.

QOTD: Time For A Luddite Trim Level?

Time For A Luddite Trim Level? In the endless rush to attract younger buyers, luxury car brands may have ended up alienating their traditional customer base – older buyers, specifically those old enough to collect social security – by implementing complex, technologically advanced features like touch screens and complicated infotainment systems. What if there were a way to opt-out?

Larry Vellequette of Automotive News has jokingly suggested a “Luddite” trim package for older buyers, which pairs traditional knobs and buttons with comfortable seating options. It may be a semi-satirical idea, but I am sure that plenty of older buyers would take well to it. I know of a few instances where older buyers have gone for the car that offers the least technology, even if it meant forsaking the brands they were traditionally loyal to.

That has meant traditional customers of Lincoln and Cadillac have shifted over to something like a Lexus ES350, because they found CUE or MyLincoln Touch to be too much of a burden. Bear in mind that these are the sort of people who find sending an email to be a great technological feat, and it’s not hard to understand their reluctance in embracing in-car computerization.

Vellequette notes that the resistance to touchscreens and their ilk is ultimately a futile pursuit. It’s also true that this demographic is literally a dying one, and the future of these brands will be with those who are technologically savvy. On the other hand, those with the means to buy new cars tend to be older. Perhaps the solution would be the ultimate automotive tech cliche – an iPad-like interface with a simple menu and easily recognizable icons. Though I’m not a “Mac Guy”, Apple products like the iPad and iPod seem to click with older users, with a minimum of futzing around required to operate them.

Four Tips for Driving in the Rain

As you take the journey to your home, you may experience rainy conditions on the road, whether it’s a slight drizzle or a serious thunderstorm. Navigating through the wet weather requires you to take extra caution – here are a few tips for helping you drive through the rain. Here are Four Tips for Driving in the Rain from

Stay in the Middle

Most roads are shaped so there’s a slight incline leading up to the middle of the thoroughfare, so the water will drain down to the sides. recommends keeping your vehicle in the center of the road to avoid driving through large accumulations of water.

Go Easy on the Brakes

As you come to a stop, you should avoid putting immediate and forceful pressure on the brake, as this can cause your wheels to lock up. Combined with the wet roads, this can also cause your vehicle to skid. Instead, pump the brakes and only apply a slight bit of pressure. This makes it extra important to constantly look at the road ahead so you can begin stopping earlier.

Replace Wiper Blades

Wipers can get worn down, but you might not realize it until it rains and you have decreased visibility. Before you begin your journey, replace your wiper blades.

Keep Calm in Hydroplane

If your car begins to hydroplane, The Weather Channel warns against immediately braking or suddenly turning to correct your path. Instead, slowly take your foot off the gas pedal until you regain control. If you begin to skid, the source notes that you should take your foot off the gas pedal and try to steer the car where you want it to go. Don’t try to use the brakes if you don’t have anti-lock brakes, but if you do, steer into the skid.
