5 SAFE SUMMER DRIVING TIPS

As a former professional race car driver and now the Chief Driving Instructor for BMW and judge on the TV show Canada’s Worst Driver, Philippe Létourneau knows a thing or two about driving. Read on to find out more about his five tips for safe driving this summer.

1.Look at Your Vehicle
Before you enter your car, look at your machine. You are driving something on public roads that weighs a lot, so it is important to make sure your equipment is ready for the task. As you walk up to the car, glance at the tires. Even brand new tires can lose up to one pound of air a month. If you have a tire that’s under-inflated, it will affect the handling of vehicle.

2. Be Safe 
Put your seat belt on correctly and adjust your seating position. Philippe stresses the importance of having the lower seat belt strap go over your hips, not your stomach, to ensure it is stable. Also be sure to sit upright and properly behind the steering wheel. Philippe says driving is like any sport, so respect and handle your equipment properly.

3. Treat Driving as a Job 
In Canada, car accidents are most commonly caused by driver distraction. Cell phone use, changing the radio station, eating and drinking in the car are some of the most common distractions. Philippe urges Canadians to stay alert and focused in the car. Your job is to get from point A to B, so take this task seriously.

4. Avoid Road Rage 
Don’t let the road enrage you. Philippe sees road rage as an increasing problem amongst Canadians, particularly in big cities like Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver. He encourages Canadians to maintain a positive approach to driving. Respect for the road and the job of driving is paramount.

5. Stay Calm  
As a judge on Canada’s Worst Driver, Philippe has witnessed some of the worst driving behaviors in the country. He says tense, panicked drivers often get themselves into the most trouble. Remaining calm behind the wheel will prevent you from making rash and dangerous decisions.

Fans of the old BMW 335d won’t have to wait much longer for an all-new 3-Series diesel. On the other hand, Audi lovers will have to sit tight for an A4 diesel.

 

The next generation A4 will herald the fifth TDI in Audi’s lineup, when it launches with a 2.0L diesel engine for the 2015 model year. Rather than go with a two-year sales window for a current generation A4 TDI, Audi decided to wait until the next generation car and avoid the substantial homologation costs. The 3.0L V6 TDI was also nixed for similar reasons.

Luckily, BMW fans will get to see the new 328d at the New York Auto Show in two weeks time. Producing 180 horsepower and 280 lb-ft, the 328d will be available as a wagon, but no manual transmission has been confirmed. The previous 335d was offered only as an automatic.

Yes, You Can Still Buy These Cars New

In the last few years, a few cars have received more than their fair share of media attention. The Scion FR-S and Subaru BRZ, for example, which a few outlets have stopped just short of describing as the return of Jesus. A few others didn’t bother stopping short. There’s been a similar reaction to some of the updated Chrysler products, proving that all it takes to win over car journalists is a nip and tuck outside, a few new materials inside, and a fleet of well-equipped press cars generously loaned to anyone who asks.

But what about those cars that don’t get any coverage? You know the ones: those cars that even the manufacturer gave up on, but they keep selling because the factories have to stay open. The cars you haven’t seen advertised since someone at AIG said “Let’s do more of these wonderful credit default swaps!” The ones that have “$5000 off!” written on the windshield as you drive by. Except, of course, at a Chrysler dealer, where that’s every car.

Fortunately, those cars aren’t forgotten by everyone. Your old pal Doug is here to remind you of several new cars that you might be surprised to find out are, in fact, still new cars.

Ford Expedition/Lincoln Navigator

 

Ford has managed to equal or best nearly every offering from archrival General Motors in most market segments. This is the exception.

Like most cars on this list, the Expedition and Navigator were decent vehicles when their current bodystyles came out. But that was in 2003. Times have changed, and – with the exception of a facelift six years ago – the Expedition and Navigator have not.

The sad thing here, if you’re Ford, is that the Navigator actually beat the Escalade to the NBA star market by an entire model year. Back when both vehicles were just full-size SUVs with some leather and a chrome grille, the Escalade was a me-too competitor in a growing segment. But while GM dreamed big and gave the Escalade the development dollars to flourish, Lincoln aimed squarely for airport limo services. Both companies hit their marks.

Honda Ridgeline

 

I remember seeing a Honda Ridgeline for the first time. Of course, I remember it only vaguely, since it was eight years ago. But I distinctly recall thinking two things: one, this is the ugliest truck since the Lincoln Blackwood; and two, Honda might be on to something with this whole car-based pickup idea.

In the ensuing eight years, I have dramatically recanted one of my views – and it’s not the one that involves the Lincoln Blackwood. Stranger than the Ridgeline’s looks is the fact you can still buy one new, as if there’s anyone left who hasn’t had the chance to get their hands on a Ridgeline since it came out in 2005.

Land Rover LR2

 

The successor to Land Rover’s transmission-eating Freelander is still on sale. In fact, it was updated for the 2013 model year. To be fair, it’s not strange that Land Rover offers an entry-level SUV. What’s unusual is that they continue to sell it, even in the face of rising competition from… Land Rover.

The LR2 starts at $37,000. The recently released Range Rover Evoque – which is the same size and uses the same engine – is around $4,000 more. Say all you want about the Evoque’s styling, but it’s like a trendy iPhone to the LR2’s company-issued Blackberry. So who would choose an LR2 when the Evoque is priced so closely? Only Land Rover dealers, who use them religiously as service loaners. Think of it as a Captiva Sport that’s fit for the Queen.

Mitsubishi’s Entire Lineup

 

Pop quiz: name a current Mitsubishi. The Endeavor is gone. The Galant is gone. The Eclipse is gone. What the hell is left?

Mitsubishi currently sells only four vehicles in North America. There’s the Lancer and its derivatives, which include the Sportback and the Evolution. There’s the Outlander, which people sometimes buy on accident. There’s the Outlander Sport, also known as the RVR in Canada, where it doesn’t sell either. And there’s an egg-shaped electric car whose name includes three capital letters and two uses of a lowercase i.

Hands up: who has seen a Mitsubishi on temporary plates in the last year? Mitsubishi dealers don’t count, though I get the feeling most of them don’t see it often enough.

Nissan Armada

 

 It’s been ten years since the Nissan Armada came out. Since then, Infiniti launched a twin version called the QX56. Then, Infiniti redesigned the twin version. Then, Infiniti renamed the twin version. And what has Nissan done to keep the Armada fresh? Nothing. Yet it inexplicably still exists, wearing the same body panels it did in 2003. To me, this is incredibly confounding since a redesign would require nothing more than slapping a different grille and trim on the QX56.

My theory is there’s an intense ongoing debate at Nissan about the Armada’s future. Half want it redesigned; half want to kill it. Until an agreement is reached, it soldiers on, facing huge competition mostly from used versions of itself and taking up a rather large amount of space on Nissan dealer lots.

Nissan Cube

 

 

The 2000s, I suspect, will be remembered by some for spawning a fleet of compact cars that were inexplicably shaped like boxes. No one asked for these cars. In fact, no one BOUGHT these cars, with the exception of a few divorced, middle-aged women who were “trying something different.”

Nearly all of the box cars have been redesigned, like the Scion xB, or killed, like the Honda Element. But perhaps the strangest of them all, the Nissan Cube, still continues with its famed Cube Pubes firmly planted on the dashboard.

Toyota Matrix

 

 

Of all the cars on this list, this one surprised me the most. Yes, even though its Pontiac Vibe twin is dead, you can still get a 2013 Toyota Matrix. Actually, you should get a 2013 Toyota Matrix, especially if you’re considering a Corolla, since the Matrix is more practical, better looking, and – most importantly – not a Corolla.

Despite the Matrix’s positive traits, Toyota has given up all hope for the hatchback, creating its last ad for the car sometime during the Bush years. My theory: Toyota was responsible for the engineering; Pontiac for the advertising. We certainly know it wasn’t the other way around.

Volvo C70

 

You’re the type of person who wants a Volvo. Somehow, you’re also the type of person who wants a convertible. If you’re still nodding your head, congratulations: you’re one of eleven.

And yet, the C70 has been available for around 15 years, including about seven in its current form. Today’s model STARTS at $41,000, which is more than twice the cost of a used one with the same exact bodystyle. So who buys ‘em? Presumably, only people who crashed their old ones and now appear in those safety books Volvo salesmen always seem to have handy. And even they get six grand off.

“The only way to break this cycle of spiking gas prices — the only way to break that cycle for good — is to shift our cars entirely, our cars and trucks, off oil,”

So said President Obama during a speech in Illinois, where he outlined a plan to provide $200 million a year for 10 years to a fund that would promote the development of alternative fuel vehicles. The funds would be provided by royalties from oil drilling on the Out Continental Shelf.

 

One notable omission from his remarks was the absence of any mention of hydrogen vehicles.Using his noted flair for rhetoric, Obama laid out his vision petroleum-free future while ignoring the fact that multiple OEMs are gearing up for a big push into fuel-cell technology

We can support scientists who are designing new engines that are more energy efficient; support scientists that are developing cheaper batteries that can go farther on a single charge; support scientists and engineers that are devising new ways to fuel our cars and trucks with new sources of clean energy — like advanced biofuels and natural gas — so drivers can one day go coast to coast without using a drop of oil.

One insider suggested that the lack of love for hydrogen has been a result of “not invented here syndrome” that is a hold over of the Bush 43 administration. While Dubya was fond of hydrogen as an alternative fuel, Obama and former Energy Secretary Steven Chu are said to be unfriendly, bordering on hostile, to the idea of hydrogen fuel cells. Unfortunately, many feel that a government partnership with the private sector will be the key to a hydrogen infrastructure breakthrough – but those parties feel that this is more likely than a cost effective, right-sized battery pack capable for a 500 mile range.

In a gloomy European context, German new car sales have remained very solid in 2012, down just 3% year-on-year to 3,082,504 registrations.

In the brands ranking, all 3 premium German carmakers now belong in the Top 4 for the first time in history: below Volkswagen solid at 21.8% share, Mercedes improves to 9.2% thanks to 283,006 sales while Audi gains 6% to land at #3 with 266,582 units and 8.6% share. BMW rounds up the Top 4, down 3% on 2011. The two other ‘German’ (although US-owned) mainstream brands fall heavily: Opel is down 16% to #5 and Ford down 11% at #6, even passed by Skoda and threatened by Hyundai in December

Korean brands lodge the best performances in the Top 20: Hyundai is up 16% to #9 and Kia up 30% to #16, with Seat (+15%) and Dacia (+9%) also performing very well. Further down, Land Rover is up 67% to #27 thanks to the Evoque and Subaru is up 52% to #28. Notice also Ferrari up 12%, Bentley up 40% and Lamborghini up 23%.

VW Golf

In the models ranking, the VW Golf is unsurprisingly the most popular model in the country for the 32nd consecutive year (no interruption since 1981!) and for the 37th time in the last 38 years, with only the Mercedes W123 interrupting its reign in 1980. It sells 240,702 units for a 7.8% market share, down 7% on 2011 but the arrival of the 7th generation late this year should give it a kick in 2013.

In fact the podium is unchanged on 2011 with the VW Passat (-14%) and Polo (-16%) following in the ranking, making it the 2nd year in a row (and ever) that Volkswagen monopolises the year-end German podium.

Mercedes B-Class

The Mercedes C-Class (-13%) and Opel Astra (-23%) exchange positions, while the BMW 3 Series is up one spot to #6. But the most impressive progression in the Top 10 is without a doubt delivered by the Mercedes B-Class, boosted by the arrival of the new model. It simply doubles its sales vs. last year and gains 21 spots to reach a record #7 at 59,420 units, even breaking into the monthly podium for the very first time in September at #3. The BMW 1 Series, also supported by a new generation, is up 7 ranks and 12% to #8 with 59,241 sales and hits a record #2 in December.

VW Tiguan

The other model hitting a significant milestone this year is the VW Tiguan, up 8 spots and 22% to a best-ever #11 at 55,615 units. While it had only broken into the monthly Top 10 twice before 2012, it repeats this feat no less than 7 times this year, peaking at #7. The Audi A6/A7 is also up 8 ranks to #13, the Skoda Octavia is stable at its highest ever year-end ranking (#17) while the VW Up! manages to break into the German year-end Top 20 for its first full year of sales in the country at #20 with 42,842 units.

Given Skoda and Seat are 100% owned by the Volkswagen Group, the best-selling ‘true’ foreign model in Germany this year and for the first time ever is the Nissan Qashqai in spite of sales down 11% to #29. It only just passes the Hyundai i30 at #30 (-12%) with the Renault Megane (#37), Toyota Yaris (#38) and Renault Clio (#40) the only other imports in the Top 40.

Mercedes ML-Class

 Other great performers include the Opel Zafira up 52% to #26, Audi Q3 up 778% to #34 for its first full year of sales, Hyundai ix35 up 44% to #48, Mercedes GLK up 34% to #51, Mercedes ML-Class up 117% to #58 and Hyundai i40 up 433% to #87. 4 all-new models appear in the Top 100: the Peugeot 208 lukewarm at #66, the Mazda CX-5 at #86, Skoda Citigo at #90 and Seat Mii at #97.

In the luxury segment, notice the Porsche Cayenne up 40% to #89, Range Rover Evoque up 377% #123, BMW 6 Series up 79% to #161, Mercedes SL-Class up 256% to #170, Bentley Continental up 54% to #257 and the Lamborghini Aventador up 633% to #303.

Time For A Luddite Trim Level? In the endless rush to attract younger buyers, luxury car brands may have ended up alienating their traditional customer base – older buyers, specifically those old enough to collect social security – by implementing complex, technologically advanced features like touch screens and complicated infotainment systems. What if there were a way to opt-out?

 

Larry Vellequette of Automotive News has jokingly suggested a “Luddite” trim package for older buyers, which pairs traditional knobs and buttons with comfortable seating options. It may be a semi-satirical idea, but I am sure that plenty of older buyers would take well to it. I know of a few instances where older buyers have gone for the car that offers the least technology, even if it meant forsaking the brands they were traditionally loyal to.

That has meant traditional customers of Lincoln and Cadillac have shifted over to something like a Lexus ES350, because they found CUE or MyLincoln Touch to be too much of a burden. Bear in mind that these are the sort of people who find sending an email to be a great technological feat, and it’s not hard to understand their reluctance in embracing in-car computerization.

Vellequette notes that the resistance to touchscreens and their ilk is ultimately a futile pursuit. It’s also true that this demographic is literally a dying one, and the future of these brands will be with those who are technologically savvy. On the other hand, those with the means to buy new cars tend to be older. Perhaps the solution would be the ultimate automotive tech cliche – an iPad-like interface with a simple menu and easily recognizable icons. Though I’m not a “Mac Guy”, Apple products like the iPad and iPod seem to click with older users, with a minimum of futzing around required to operate them.

If your car begins to hydroplane, The Weather Channel warns against immediately braking or suddenly turning to correct your path. Instead, slowly take your foot off the gas pedal until you regain control. If you begin to skid, the source notes that you should take your foot off the gas pedal and try to steer the car where you want it to go. Don’t try to use the brakes if you don’t have anti-lock brakes, but if you do, steer into the skid.
